Dr. Seuss Shower

My dear friend is expecting her first little baby boy in September...so my mom and I decided to throw her a shower! Since she LOVES everything Dr. Seuss, what better theme then just that! We had so much fun with all of the little details!!! We even learned some great new "tricks" that I am ready to use at other showers.
We decided to use old Dr. Seuss books as the theme for each type of food. As you can see we did some fun play on words. We even made the guests wear a boa and Dr. Seuss hat for a fun photo! My amazingly talented scrapbooker friend Lea took over the creativity part! She took fun photos of the guests and then will use an old book to make a memory book! So much fun!

We had a wonderful 4th of July. Our neighborhood had a potluck. We live up on a hill and we are able to see fireworks from all around! It's a great view and nice to be close to home too! So... We brought desserts, salads, and enjoyed meeting the neighbors. My mom and dad came down to enjoy the show with us too! Andrew LOVED the fireworks! I was surprised, but he loved them! It was an especially hot day, so he enjoyed swimming before the big show! It was a wonderful day!

Boise, Idaho

There are many things that I love about summer, but one of my favorites is the chance to make the annual June roadtrip with my mom and Andrew to Boise, Idaho to celebrate my niece's birthday! This year was just as wonderful! When we are in Idaho there are several things we have to do! 1) Chik-fil-A (No doubt this is the best food ever!) 2) Cracker Barrel (Can you say yum! I love their grilled catfish! Andrew loves their mac and cheese) 3) Hobby Lobby (By far the best craft store ever!) We had an amazing time and the cousins absolutely adore one another! San Diego is going to be SO much fun!!!

What A Year!

This by far has been one of the craziest years, but we are so blessed with an adorable, funny, energetic little boy. We celebrated Andrew's 2nd birthday on Saturday, June 4th. We were so lucky, because cousins Reganne and Zoe were able to join us for his party. Of course his two best buddies: Trenton and Gabe were there too! What a great time was had. Since Andrew is addicted to three things right now; Trains, Little Einsteins and Mickey Mouse, we had a Train Party! So much fun!

ONE CRAZY WEEK!

It’s been a tough couple of weeks for the Swires’ Family. For those of you interested, here is the “Reader’s Digest” version…
Thurs: 1/6 Andrew is wheezy and coughing so off to doctor for breathing treatment.
Fri: 1/7 Andrew is wheezy and grunts so another breathing treatment at doctors.
Sun: 1/9 Andrew is wheezy and coughing to the point of throwing up and not responding to his inhaler so off to doctor for breathing treatment and a dose of steroids...
Mon: 1/10 Andrew isn't doing well so check in with doctor for breathing treatment (he didn't get better) and dose of steroid. The doctor decided Andrew needed to be taken to the hospital right away.Tears were shed by mommy on the drive to the hospital. After checking in we had to get a chest x-ray, and then get him to his room on the pediatric floor for blood tests and an oral swab. It was determined that he had RSV. The good news was that he was getting enough oxygen, just working way too hard! So they started the regimen of breathing treatments every 2 hours. Kori and Tim dropped by to visit and then Fawnia came to watch the Ducks game with me, because I really wanted Greg to be able to watch the game on a big screen with his good friend Tom! Our minister also dropped in to say a prayer with us. Greg and I spent the night in the hospital.

Tues: 1/11 The nurse was so happy that Andrew didn’t need oxygen all night, but the doctor didn’t have such good news. He was concerned that Andrew wasn’t making enough progress, so we needed to up his breathing treatment medication to Epinephrine and give him more steroids. He also wasn’t taking in enough fluids (and hadn’t since Thurs) so an IV was needed. This was the hardest thing, because as they held him down and got the IV into his hand, his vein collapsed. So they had to use his other hand. He had also developed a fever. Thankfully, by Tuesday evening he was showing significant improvement! Breathing treatments only as needed! Kori visited and Rex visited and then Mojdeh spent the whole day with Kaye and stayed that evening too! It was such a blessing!
Wed: 1/12 The doctor was happy that Andrew had no need for breathing treatments Tuesday night and he was doing much better, actually playing with cars! He continued to improve and we were discharged from the hospital Wednesday afternoon!
God is good and we are so grateful for all of the wonderful thoughts and prayers! Andrew is doing well and enjoying being himself and having WAY TOO MUCH ENERGY!

December 2010 Wrap-Up

We had a wonderful and busy December. Andrew enjoyed "caroling around the carousel" (OK, honestly he is not a fan of carousels). We had a wonderful time with Kaye's parents and Aunt Lea at the "Holiday Magic at the Mill", and then celebrated Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in Tigard with Kaye's parents. We then traveled down on Sunday to celebrate Christmas with Greg's mom! It was wonderful to see all of our family (the only people missing were Kaye's sister, bro-in-law, and the nieces!)

Halloween 2010

Friday: Andrew and I went to a clay handprinting party! It was great and we are looking forward to seeing the final product soon!

Saturday: We had planned to go to a big Halloween Party, but Andrew was exhausted (probably from all the cheering during the football game! GO OREGON!)

Sunday: We had planned a wonderful gathering at a friends home, but unfortunately her daughter was ill and the party was canceled. (now I have a ton of witch cupcake cones) We managed to make it to a Harvest Festival at a local church. (Andrew was exhausted and fell asleep). That evening we gave out all 30 of the full size candy bars we had purchased. WOW! That was a record for us.

We are looking forward to November and lots of wonderful family time! (especially when the nieces come to visit!)

October 2010

It is hard to believe we are already in October. I do love the crisp, cool mornings and the pumpkin spice lattes! Andrew is doing so well. He attends daycare a few days a week and absolutely LOVES it! Every morning when I drop him off, he runs to the window to wave good-bye to me! He has become an incredible "preschool" student! Sitting with the "big" kids and participating appropriately at times! WOW! He is our dare-devil. Fearing nothing. He tries sliding down slides on his back with his head first and jumping off the couch. I am constantly worried as he fears not. Greg and I aren't really sure where he gets this from, but WOW, he keeps us busy. We are looking forward to several Halloween events this weekend!

State Fair and Friends

Andrew has had a a busy few weeks. Here is the rundown.
He loves climbing and running everywhere. He has figured out how to unscrew tops and lids. He loves to grab faces and give a kiss, or shake his head no when he doesn't want something. At the Oregon State Fair he made it clear that he is NOT a fan of Smokey the Bear or the Beaver. He thinks people dressed in costumes are quite scary. Andrew loves french fries, pulled pork and yogurts! He is our HAPPY little boy!

Hawaii 2010

Our Family and Grandpa Chuck and Grandma DiDi, had an amazing vacation to The Big Island! Mom and Dad used their points to hook us up with a great stay at the Hilton Waikoloa Village for the first six days and then we drove to Kiluea Military Camp for three days and finally returned for a night in Kona before flying home! After a little craziness on our first night (the hotel had overbooked and we stayed one night in the Marriott next door) we checked in and had been upgraded to the "Presidential Suite". My excitement that I would likely never stay again in this nice 3,000 square foot suite! WOW!!! We had an incredible trip! We enjoyed snorkeling, swimming with sea turtles, playing with Andrew as he experienced water for the very first time, swimming in 92 degree water, going to the volcano and experiencing the red glow it produces at night. We stood line and sat next to Greg Grunberg (Heroes) and his family as we enjoyed Shaved Ice! It was such a wonderful trip and we look forward to going back soon!

We had a great First Birthday! Andrew loved hanging with friends and enjoyed his first cake. I frosted it with cream cheese frosting and then made a "baby friendly" cake! He loved the frosting. It was a fun day. Andrew decided to take a nap in the middle of the party (right when we were supposed to serve cake!) He is quite a character! We love our little man!

In precisely one week Andrew turns 1! I have mixed emotions, mostly because it is still rather surreal to me. I cannot believe where I was a year ago and where we are now. Andrew is an amazing baby! He has the best personality (even though temper tantrums have started). He is so much fun! Recently he has decided that he MUST feed himself. He actually does well!

It is so hard to believe that Andrew is now 11 months old. In one short month, he'll be a year! WOW!! He is as busy as ever. He LOVES to find any toy possible (or dad's IPod Itouch)down the stairs. He works hard to stick those toys through the slots of the gate and loves to hear them crash down. Andrew is in love with the outdoors. Anytime he gets a chance he runs to the front door expecting someone to let him out! He also loves to get into anything at his level! He is our busy little boy!

Walking And Faces

So Andrew started walking (officially many steps) on Sunday, March 28th! What an incredible event that was. We keep taking tons of video! He loves to walk everywhere, which is so funny, since he looks so little! Today while at a friend's house, Andrew decided to do that crazy face and I captured it! Along with his teeth. Yes, they have arrived. He's got all four on top and the two bottom! Hopefully we won't have too many more for awhile!

Today was a big day for us! Andrew realized that he can walk, whenever he wants to without assistance. He's been taking steps, just only one or two at a time until today! It was actually funny, because he just suddenly took a bunch of steps this afternoon and now he sees that as an easy way to get to different places. It is so funny to see him. We are enjoying Spring Break. Unfortunately Andrew is on his third round of medication for ear infections. He is doing well, though and his energy is as busy as ever. Taking more steps and getting more teeth. He is noisy, busy and so lovable too. He isn't in to sleeping at night, so that has been a struggle, but he is a really good baby. 9 Months!

Andrew turned 9 Months on March 3rd! What a busy little boy. He is into everything and loves to stand up and prepare to take steps. He is our official "furniture mover" and loves to push every chair or storage ottoman all over the house. He is still fighting a double ear infection, but what a trooper. His weight remains around 19 pounds 5 ounces. He favorite things continue to be; his friends at daycare, laughing, moving, kids, and his train and computers!

What's Up With Andrew?!

It's been a busy, sickness filled couple of weeks. We found out that Andrew had a double ear infection and have been busy treating that. In the meantime, he has found lots of great opportunities to crawl and on Friday decided to take 3 steps by himself (of course Kaye missed it entirely). He weighs around 19 pounds 4 ounces and loves being around people, especially at his daycare with other kids!!! As you can see from the above photos, he has a constant runny nose and hates to have it wiped! Also, he loves to climb everywhere and get stuck! He's all boy, that is for sure!

Pampers is having a contest of sorts, where you are to get video of your baby crawling. The baby must enter the screen from left and exit right and it needs to be short. Kaye had a hard time getting the video completed, so once Greg got home he was able to help her get a video that would work. In the meantime there was one of the best blooper videos ever! Enjoy!

Andrew has continued to be a busy, busy boy. His highlights have been that he loves to pull himself up onto various items and then will let go for a bit and then grab back on. I predict we will have a walking baby on our hands sooner than later. He is also into everything! Which means nothing is safe, as he finds anything he can to play with. He loves to get into his carseat and play with it. Unfortunately as you can tell from one of the photos it flipped over on him and he got a nice scratch on his face. There is never a dull moment in the Swires' household, NEVER!

Today turned 6 months old! We had a great appointment with the doctor. What a trooper he survived 4 shots and is doing great. He weighs a whopping 18 pounds and is just 24 3/4 inches long. He is doing wonderful. The highlight of the appointment is when the nurse originally came and checked his weight, height, head circumference, etc, she also gave us the 8 month questionnaire to complete prior to our next appointment. Well when Andrew's doctor came she was observing him and Andrew showed off his new (nearly crawling) skills as well as his trunk control and overall body strength. She looked at us and said, "the nurse gave you an 8 month questionnaire, well he has already met all of those". It was hilarious! He is quite the overachiever with regards to milestones. Which may slow down, but I am enjoying my little superstar!

Hi Ho, Hi Ho, It's Back To Work I Go!

Today was my big day back to work after a nice, long maternity leave! What a day! Although it was tough to leave Andrew, my work could not have made the transition any better. When I arrived to our Monday morning meeting it was actually a surprise "Welcome Back!" party. We enjoyed yummy treats and danced to "Celebrate!" At the conclusion of the meeting, my team serenaded me with a song to the tune of Sonny & Cher's "I Got You Babe!" It was adorable and I had to share the lyrics. (Imagine a group of 8 adults singing with the background music on)

Fishing and Cord Wrangling

So, Andrew continues to be quite the mover. A friend's husband took care of Andrew while her and I ran to a baby sale and his comment was that Andrew was wonderful he just had to be corralled! He loves moving... He is rolling everywhere and is attempting to master the butt scoot. I am worried that crawling is coming up and am trying to discourage it, since it means I will be booted from the New Moms Connection group that I am in! He is also always after cords. I think I have them all hidden and then suddenly he makes it from across the room to find a cord, which is so scary. I can't take my eyes off little man for a moment...
Well, Greg and I have a favorite movement that Andrew does at various times throughout the day. We fondly call it "fishing". Greg was able to capture a video of it too.

They don't make things...

The saying "they don't make things like they used to" has been our household motto over the past week. We have had a new humidifier break, our TV's remote control, Andrew's mobile, and our most recent, the 3 year old 42 inch Plasma TV. UGH! We are frustrated by these things just randomly no longer working, but I think my frustration level increases when I get the details from the manufacture. Our TV is past its' warranty and early estimates are between $400 and $500 to fix. (We could easily buy a brand-new one for just a little more...) Fisher Price is working to fix the mobile (after I paid $11.00 to send it back to them and need to wait 3-6 weeks). Which means Andrew's bedtime routine is a bit harder now... UGH! I just wish that products lasted a reasonable amount of time and fixing things was a bit cheaper! Off to go try and return the humidifier....

Andrew's Antics

The hospital we delivered Andrew at has the most amazing New Moms Connection group. Basically we get together and talk about the realities of motherhood! It's so amazing... Anyways, today Andrew decided to be a major roly poly, but with a goal in mind. He ended up rolling over to the baby girl next to us and grabbed her toy and then rolled back. That was hilarious, but the best part is then later he rolled over and took another toy, which she was able to grab back and then he grabbed it again! Seriously, he is out of control! Greg wondered if I had brought any toys for Andrew, which of course I had, hers just looked a whole lot better :-)

Andrew's First Halloween

What a fun First Halloween! We couldn't pick just one cute outfit, so we had to use all 3!!! He was an adorable Pumpkin, a glow-in-the-dark Skeleton, and a crazy little Monkey!

Since the big U of Oregon game was on we invited Kaye's friend, Brandi and her son Trenton (he's only a month older then Andrew), over to watch the game and handout candy. (Her husband was at the game). We had to get photos of our two little monkeys! So, so much fun!!!

Another Lifesaver!

OK, so this will be quick, but I had to share 2 must-have for new parents! First is a battery-operated nasal aspirator with music too! I LOVE IT! It works so well and Andrew doesn't hate it like he did the bulb one! This is our lifesaver. The other item is the crane humidifier. We got the penguin for Andrew and it is amazing. We had previously purchased a much more expensive humidifier and it didn't work well, this one is AMAZING! OK, I will post some fun shots tomorrow! I LOVE FALL!

4 Months!

Andrew went to his four month checkup today! He comes in at a "thriving" 16 pounds 2 ounces. He's 24 1/2 inches long! So far has met ALL of the milestones and most of the "soon-to-come" milestones. He still loves to roll back and forth and grab toys to shove in his mouth! He is sooo much fun! Tomorrow we will post a photo of him! He is our little monkey. We recently got his high chair out (with our brand-new dining room furniture set! Thanks for the early Christmas present mom & dad)! He loves it! He likes to see us while we are eating and does so great! We love our family!

15 Pounds

Alright, he did it! Andrew broke the 15 pound mark. Today at our hospital's weekly Mommy & Me class (Which I LOVE!) Andrew weighed in at 15 pounds 3 ounces. This boy is growing and mommy is gaining lots of muscle! At our class today, Andrew had a great time with his friend. He loves this other little 2 1/2 month old baby boy. They just stared at each other and Andrew made all sorts of noises and cooing to his little friend. It was adorable. I am so thankful to have such a happy (permagrin) baby boy :-) I'm not sure where he gets it from...

Sleep Changes

Andrew started changing some of his sleep behaviors recently and it makes me smile. He used to only fall asleep in our arms and if we put him down, he would wake up immediately. As of this week, he falls asleep anywhere! It's hilarious. The other day he was slightly whining, and I was in the kitchen and walked over to see him as he was playing on the floor. When I got there he had already zonked. Then today he was playing with his bouncy chair and seemed to be getting frustrated, so I went to move him and he was crashed. He is such a silly baby. I am learning that certain sounds signify that he is about to fall asleep :-)

Another Weigh-In

Enjoyed another wonderful New Moms Connection class at the hospital! So much fun! Each time we get our babies weighed. Andrew is progressing rapidly and weighed in at 14 pounds 13 ounces. WOW! I think he's bullking up for Football Season!!!

The State Fair

So the family and Aunt Natalie decided to head to the state fair on Labor Day, what an adventure! The weather was perfect and we were there from 12:30 until nearly 7:30! WOW! We walked, talked, sat and just enjoyed our time alot. Andrew does well, although he isn't a fan of big crowds and would much rather be carried and see what's going on around him rather than just watch from his stroller. Overall he did great. We were watching the roller derby ladies and he did not enjoy that one bit, but I have to admit they are a little scary (in that tough kind of way). Natalie found his ticklish spots and he would giggle and laugh so hard, it made my heart melt, so darn adorable.

3 Months Old!

Andrew turned 3 months old today. I am amazed at how much he has grown. He weighs 14 pounds 7 ounces. He LOVES to suck (strong) on his full fist, occasionally gaging himself. He smiles all the time. He is such a happy guy. He coos and even giggles. Our friends Tim and Kori were over and he kept giggling at Tim! I've got to get it on video tape. It is so cute. I love this stage. His personality is showing and he is so much fun, exhausting but fun. I am becoming more confident in going out with him and we went to a New Mom's Connection class at Salem Hospital today and that was a lot of fun.

Seattle Trip

We embarked on our first family trip (with Grandma DiDi and Grandpa Chuck) on Thursday. We arrived in Tukwila on Thursday after a wonderful drive. It took less than 4 hours and Andrew did amazing! What a trooper! Here's the quick overview (I WILL bore you with the details)...

Thurs: Arrive in Seattle. Dinner @ Hotel.

Friday: Tour the Waterfront and Pier. Visited Kerry Park with an amazing view of the city. Lunch at Ivars. Returned downtown in the evening for Andrew to meet Uncle Dusty and then off to the Old Spaghetti Factory with a nice evening walk at Sculpture Park.

Saturday: Hanging at the hotel and then spending time in Tukwila and IKEA! Off to the Denver Broncos vs Seattle Seahawks game at 7:30pm. Andrew gets to hang with Grandma and Grandpa. The Broncos didn't win, but Andrew did amazing!

Sunday: After a nice breakfast start driving home-a quick trip to the outlet mall and some new Nikes for Kaye!

Kaye's Top 5 Baby Must-Haves

So, as a brand-new first time mommy, I had to list my Top 5 MUST-HAVES! These are the items that have made it so much easier and helped me along this new journey and that I quite simply could not live without...

#5 Soothie Pacifiers- http://www.soothie-pacifier.com/ Yep, those "ugly" green pacifiers that I swore my child would never use! Andrew LOVES them and since we started using them they really have helped him calm down (he sort-of takes after his mom in many ways :-) We recently discovered the "Wubbanub" and we're testing it out!

#4 Baby Swing-http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?e=product&pid=31332&st=2002- Although he wasn't a fan early on, Andrew now loves his swing! In fact, it easily gives me an extra hour of time! Best part about it is that I bought it for $35.00. I love bargains!

#3 Homemade Burp Cloths-My mom has many talents, including sewing. She made all of the nursery beddings for her grandchildren. Well, she also found a simple way to make burp cloths! Buy cloth diapers, sew a little ribbon and voila, you have a homemade burp cloth!

Andrew just turned 2 months old! At his appointment on the 4th he weighed 12 pounds 8 ounces! He is sure growing quickly! I barely survived his first round of shots-yuck, but Greg did a great job holding Andrew. The doctor was amazed at his strength and she said he has the neck control of a 4 month old...

On June 3rd, 2009 at 5:35am we welcomed Andrew Charles into the world. He weighed 7 pounds 3 ounces and was 19 inches long, Adorable!!! Labor was really really difficult, wow! Our hospital stay was amazing and the nursing staff absolutely incredible!
